Occupying a good portion of downtown BSB, the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is the heart of the city and the sultanate's Muslim faith. It was commissioned by and named after the father of the current sultan and was completed in 1958. It is an excellent example of classical Islamic style and makes great use of extravagant yet tasteful designs. The floors and walls are made from the finest Italian marble, stained glass from England, carpets from Saudi Arabia and Belgium, and a 3.5 million-piece Venetian glass mosaic inside the 52m high golden dome. The mosque sits in its own artificial lagoon and the reflection that it produces is beautiful. In the lagoon is a replica of a mahligai, a 16th century stone boat used for special religious occasions. The usual dress codes apply of modest attire and the removal of shoes at the entrance.
