Brunei -> BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -> Kampung Ayer

This water village that houses approximately 30,000 people (25% of BSB's population) was the original home to Brunei's seat of power. Kampung Ayer is made up of 28 water villages of people who still live in the traditional way of life. After the British Residency of 1906, the current downtown was laid out on reclaimed land but most of the kampung-dwellers decided to stay in their stilted houses. Now this area is a maze of wooden planks that connect schools, shops, floating gas stations, brightly painted shacks, and fire stations on stilts. Though they live in the traditional way of life, most of the homes have electricity, modern plumbing, and television. The best way to see the villages is by boat tour, which you can combine with a "drive-by" of the sultan's palace.
