The Istana Nurul Iman is the official residence of the sultan and is larger than Buckingham Palace and the Vatican. This monument to self-indulgence cost US$350 million and features 1788 rooms, 257 toilets, a banquet hall that seats 4,000, 18 elevators and 44 staircases. It is said that it takes 51,000 light bulbs to illuminate the palace. The throne room is said to be particularly extravagant with 12 one-ton chandeliers and four grand thrones. The palace is closed to the public except for two days during Hari Raya Aidilfitri at the end of Ramadan.
